In a trip inspired by Marcos’ longtime passion for this place, we paddled 10 days from the mangrove mazes of Bahia Magdalena near San Carlos past the dunes and rocky hillsides of Isla Magdalena, across the impressive mouth, and down the length of Bahia Almejas.

We played in the waves among the rocks at the tips of the islands. We took a boat ride to visit with some whales. Of birds there were many! Magnificent frigates, osprey, ibis, herons and egrets of many types, hundreds of cormorants, curlews, sandpipers, oystercatchers, even a bald eagle on a nest. A band of playful sea lion pups followed us splashing and diving under the kayaks for a good half mile.
