Magdalena Bay Wildlife

The soul of an immense and beautiful landscape

Magdalena Bay is the meeting place of two significant ocean currents—the cold California Current coming from Alaska, and the warm Equatorial Countercurrent from across the Pacific. This vortex creates a massive upwelling of nutrients, which supports astonishing biodiversity. It is one of the largest lagoon systems and richest estuarine waters in the world.

This makes Magdalena Bay a great place to watch wildlife! Creatures come from far and wide to feast from the sea’s bounty. To the banquet come gray whales, dolphins, sea turtles, wintering waterfowl, and even coyotes.

Enjoy the depth of expertise at your disposal from lifelong local fisherman and guide Marcos Simental and Naturalist Andrew Emlen. Bring wildlife up close with our top-of-the line high definition Vortex spotting scope.

On our return to Hotel Mar y Arena via motorboat, we will spend a couple of hours with the gray whales which migrate from Alaskan waters each year to breed and calve in Pacific lagoons such as this one.

A motorboat will provide support when we move between camps, enabling us to bring a kitchen setup more convenient to this environment than what fits into our kayaks. People are welcome to bring larger photography equipment if desired. However, please be aware that sand and wind can make a tough combination for sensitive equipment.

In 2019 we have a special combo option, with this trip and the Natural History of Baja on the gulf side of the peninsula. Plus a day’s hike into Tabor Canyon with its pools of water, stately palms, cathedral-like fig trees, and endemic Xantus hummingbirds. Register for both kayak trips and receive 10% off both, plus the tabor hike free.

Private room add $100.
