Exploration and Variety

From a 16,000 year-old volcano to shell-laden marine terraces; from colorful cliffs to white sand beaches, the variety of these three islands provides a scenic and fascinating setting for your kayak vacation.

Isla Coronados is the volcano, with lava feeder tubes frozen in time, looking like a dragon’s eye, or perhaps a cabbage. A colony of sea lions enjoys a haul-out on the more remote NE corner of the island.

A 7-nm crossing (which typically takes 2-2.5 hours) puts the seldom-paddled western side of Isla del Carmen within reach. Rock hopping and sea caves number among the paddling delights. Geology and snorkeling are both colorful along here, and the island faces “Blue Whale Alley” between itself and the Loreto coast. The Sierra la Giganta, a mountain range with one peak almost a mile high, is the dramatic western backdrop.

Isla Danzante, the sleeping dragon, takes igneous rock to new artistic expressions. Volcanic dikes, hoodoo peaks, thin purple ash layers, mushroom rocks, and a natural arch keep your head turning.
