Day Trips

The spirit of Loreto comes alive when you see it from the water at sunrise. The gilded mission tower, the mountains towering over in warm tones. Join us for a couple hours in the morning, or take the day and get away to Coronados Island with a kayak.

For those windy days, or just for something different, we also offer canyon hikes, geology walks, and a visit to San Javier Mission in the mountains. Please ask!

Whale watching is another special treat in Loreto. Between January and mid-March, the blues, fins, and humpbacks can often be found. Sperm whales come in groups during the summer. Orcas, pilot whales, greys and up to one-third of the world’s species of whales and dolphins have been recorded in the Gulf of California. A drive to see the grey whales in the Pacific lagoons is worth the trip, especially in February. We can arrange whale-watching for you. Let us know you’re interested!

Let us organize a private day tour for your family or group, or inquire about day tours we have coming up.

Loreto Waterfront Cruise

Loreto mission and waterfront

Loreto mission and waterfront

The first mission and capitol of Baja, Loreto is particularly pretty from the sea. Mountains tower over the palm trees and Baja architecture. The sea gives a different perspective and a feeling of freedom you don’t find on the land. Watch pelicans glide by at eye level and frigatebirds try to steal a meal. If you’re lucky, you may see a blue-footed booby plunge into the sea for a fish, or a whale blow in front of Isla del Carmen. Look for Isla Danzante to the south, the silhouette of a sleeping dragon in front of layered folks of blue mountains.

No experience necessary. Tour includes kayak or SUP, paddle, life jacket, spray deck if kayak is a sit-inside model, dry bag, guide, and Marine Park permits. Two to three hour tour leaves from Loreto waterfront at a time of your choosing. We recommend mornings. Prices per person

Loreto Waterfront Sunrise or Sunset Tour

SUP at sunrise

SUP at sunrise

Take in the Loreto Waterfront Cruise at the very best time of day. I love the sunrise for its changing colors in the sky, warm golden glow on the mission tower and the town. Calm waters and reflections. Sunsets are dramatic as well with the lighting on distant Isla del Carmen and the silhouettes of the Sierra la Giganta to the west. Enjoy the exhilaration of gliding on the sea with the birds around. Somehow seeing it from the water puts Loreto in context, a small, scenic town between the sea and the mountains. You see the magic in the Pueblo Magico.

Formed by a volcano only about 16,000 years ago, Isla Coronados is a young island. White sand beaches, beautiful scenery, and accessibility to Loreto make it a popular day trip. Our panga captain will take you on an exploration around the rugged side of the island to see a sea lion colony and fascinating geological formations. Snorkel the bay to see vibrant fish life. Enjoy the freedom of paddling along the beach or into paddle, life jacket, dry bag,the next bay. There is also a rugged hike up the volcano mound with rewarding views. Return to Loreto in the early afternoon.

Hidden Port & Punta Coyote Tour

When the wind is up a little more than comfortable at the Loreto waterfront, Puerto Escondido “Hidden Port” provides a venue for paddling. Skirt along cliffs of volcanic layer cake to a protected beach where the snorkeling is good in almost any conditions, and sometimes truly spectacular! If you’d like to see what large wind-waves feel like, Punta Coyote offers the opportunity to try them out with relatively low consequences (with a guide).

The beach is rocky, with scenic views of the Sierra la Gigantic mountains. Baja desert plants line the back of the beach. In addition to copal, torote, and rama parda, look for inside-out flower if the conditions are right, and the predatory green spiders that hide on the blossoms.

Inside the port itself, mangroves fringe the water, populated with snowy egrets, great blue heron, night heron, and overhead the osprey and magnificent frigates often soar. Various lagoons of the Hidden Port provide shelter for a spectrum of boats, which are interesting in their own right.

No experience necessary for wind forecast to 15mph. Experience required for wind forecast to 20mph. Tour includes kayak, paddle, life jacket, spray deck if kayak is a sit-inside model, dry bag, guide, trail lunch, Marine Park permits, and taxi-van to our launch 25 minutes south of Loreto.
