Make the sea your playground. With skills to handle wind and waves, current and surf, these forms of energy become resources and sources of joy. Come play and learn!
This 6-day course takes advantage of both sides of the Baja peninsula for an introduction to the various ways in which Nature can be dynamic. Different venues provide a spectrum of challenges and learning opportunities. The Loreto National Marine Park, on the Sea of Cortez, provides rocky features, close islands, and warm water, as well as stunning mountain scenery. Puerto San Carlos, on Magdalena Bay on the Pacific side, delivers current, surf, and more reliable wind. Extensive mangrove systems make Mag Bay a rich nursery for sea life such as shrimp, birds, and sea turtles.
This course is designed for paddlers with a good foundation of boat handling skills. Sea Kayak Baja Mexico makes British Canoeing & ACA courses accessible to Latin American participants who have limited access to official training, but typically a rich background of experience. Taking this training in Baja is an exciting cultural travel adventure with a purpose, and a common link with the local participants, many of whom are Baja guides. The background of the participants, as well as the experience of the coaches, enriches any course.
We integrate related programs in this course, such as British Canoeing’s Foundation Safety and Rescue course and navigation basics. Taking the British Canoeing 3-star assessment and/or the ACA Level 3 or 4 skills assessment is an option if you notify us in advance of your interest in this. (Fees will apply).
Sea Paddler Course will be run by a bilingual coaching team featuring Ginni Callahan and one of her certified and experienced guide/coaching staff.
The Basic price is designed for guides and paddlers who live in Baja, bring their own paddling equipment, can help out with the transportation for others, and will be commuting to this course daily. Lunches and dinners are included for all. The Inclusive prices cover transfers, meals, and paddling equipment during the course. Lodging is at the Tripui Resort, and camping is on the resort lawn, with access to a shared shower/bathroom for the first 4 nights. The arrangement with the resort includes delicious restaurant dinners and gets us access to a classroom in the evenings, which is handy for spreading out nautical charts and using audio-visual teaching aids. We also have access to their pool if Mother Nature should be over-zealous with the wind she offers us. When we move to Magdalena Bay, there is no camping available, so shared lodging will be provided for campers at the waterfront Mar y Arena Eco-Hotel.
